A 40x40 cm chair cushion is suitable for larger, square seating surfaces. This size is particularly common for dining chairs, kitchen chairs, wooden chairs, stacking chairs and wider folding chairs. As a 40x40 cm seat cushion, it is therefore suitable for many typical chair and stool seating surfaces in living and dining areas.

The standard cushion is available in Panama or faux leather and with a cushion thickness of 2, 3 or 4 cm. The cover is removable and has a zipper. There is also a Panama version with ties for suitable rattan, wicker and dining chairs.

Which Chairs Are Suitable for 40x40 cm?

The chair cushion fits a seating surface that is approximately 40 cm wide and 40 cm deep. Measure directly on the usable seating surface rather than at the outer edges of the chair frame.

Typical applications include:

• Dining chair: The size is suitable for many larger wooden, metal and upholstered chairs with a square seating surface.
• Kitchen chair: 40x40 cm is suitable for wider kitchen chairs and hard seating surfaces.
• Stacking and event chair: This size can be used for correspondingly large, straight seating surfaces in community halls, seminar rooms and event venues.
• Rattan and wicker chair: If the chair has a suitable backrest, the version with ties is also available.
• Wide folding chair: The size is suitable when smaller cushions do not cover the seating surface sufficiently.
• Square stool: Larger stools can also be cushioned with a 40x40 cm chair cushion.

35x35 or 40x40 cm?

A 40x40 cm chair cushion is five centimetres wider and five centimetres deeper than the next smaller standard size.

If the usable seating surface measures approximately 40 cm in both directions, this size can cover most of the available area. If the chair is noticeably smaller, a 35x35 cm chair cushion is more suitable.

A cushion should not extend noticeably beyond the front or side edges. However, it does not need to cover every last millimetre of the seating surface. The important thing is that it rests fully and securely on the seat.

Square, Round or Trapezoidal?

The 40x40 cm size is intended for square seating surfaces. If the chair has a different shape, the appropriate version should be selected.

• Round seating surface: 40 cm diameter chair cushion
• Wider at the front than at the back: custom-made trapezoidal chair cushion
• Different width or depth: custom-made rectangular or square cushion

With a trapezoidal seating surface, a square cushion may extend beyond the sides at the front and leave a gap at the back. In this case, a custom-made cushion is the more suitable solution.

Panama or Faux Leather?

For this standard size, Panama and faux leather are available. Both materials are suitable for dining rooms, kitchens and other indoor areas but differ in surface and cleaning requirements.

Panama is suitable if you prefer a textile surface. The cover can be removed from the foam core and washed at 30°C.

Faux leather is practical when dirt should be wiped directly from the surface. This can be useful, for example, in kitchens, restaurants, medical practices or holiday apartments.

Mali, Textura Plus and Premium Faux Leather B2 and B1 are not available in this standard size. They are available through custom-made chair cushions.

Which Cushion Thickness Is Suitable for 40x40 cm?

The standard chair cushion is available with a cushion thickness of 2, 3 or 4 cm. We use foam with a density of 35 and compression hardness of 5.0.

• 2 cm: flat and subtle cushioning when the existing seat height should change as little as possible
• 3 cm: medium thickness for dining rooms, kitchens, offices and everyday use
• 4 cm: more cushioning for hard wooden, metal and rattan chairs as well as longer periods of sitting

The thicker the chair cushion, the more it changes the seating position. Particularly with a dining chair, check the remaining distance between your legs and the tabletop.

Thicknesses of 6 or 8 cm are available exclusively as custom-made cushions.

40x40 cm Chair Cushion with Ties

For rattan, wicker and other chairs with a suitable backrest, this size is also available with longer tie straps.

The ties are positioned at the rear corners and are tied behind the backrest or to suitable supports. This helps prevent the cushion from sliding forwards as easily when sitting down or standing up.

What Helps Prevent Slipping?

The regular standard 40x40 cm chair cushion is manufactured without fastening ties. On a smooth seating surface, a suitably cut anti-slip mat can be placed underneath the cushion.

If the chair has a backrest or suitable supports, the version with ties can be selected instead.

For individual dimensions, custom-made chair cushions are also available with optional shorter fastening ties at the rear corners.

Can the Chair Cushion Be Used Outdoors?

Panama and faux leather can be used in sheltered outdoor areas if the cushions are brought indoors during rain and longer periods of non-use.

The complete chair cushion is not waterproof because of the seams and zipper. It should therefore not be left permanently in the rain or stored while damp.

For regular outdoor use, Textura Plus and Premium Faux Leather B2 are available through custom-made cushions.
